In most health systems, hyaluronan injections for osteoarthritis are paid for privately rather than covered by statutory or public health insurance. But this varies, and we do not know the rules that apply where you live — so we will not guess at them here. Your physician and your insurer can tell you.
In 1995 the German Medical Devices Act came into force. From then on, injectable hyaluronan preparations for treating osteoarthritis were no longer classified as medicinal products but as medical devices.
The difference lies in the mode of action: a medical device is held to act mainly physically — here, improving lubrication within the joint space. Medicinal products act pharmacologically, through an interaction with the body's own substances.
With that reclassification the injections fell outside the pharmaceutical budget, and statutory health insurers were no longer required to reimburse them. Before 1995 they were reimbursed.
Note what changed and what did not: the classification changed. Nothing about the product's effect was re-assessed in that step.
That a treatment is not reimbursed does not automatically mean it is worthless — and it does not mean it works. In the first instance it means only that it is not in the benefits catalogue. Whether it is effective is a separate question, and the evidence on that is mixed. We set it out openly, including the critical voices.
