Exercise or rest?

When your knee hurts, it is understandable to want to move as little as possible. But appropriate movement is part of treatment for knee osteoarthritis. It can ease pain and improve function. The key is to find a level of activity that suits you and your symptoms.

Muscles provide support.

The muscles around the knee help guide and stabilise the joint. If they are used very little, they lose strength. Everyday tasks may then become harder. Appropriate training addresses this: it strengthens the muscles and helps maintain mobility.

Strength. Mobility. Endurance.

An exercise plan can combine several elements. Strength exercises train the muscles. Mobility exercises support the range of movement. And endurance activities improve general fitness. Your healthcare team or physiotherapist can help you choose suitable exercises and how much to do.

What do you enjoy?

Possible options include walking, cycling, swimming or exercising in water. Choose something that suits your abilities and that you enjoy doing regularly. After a long break, a small, manageable start is often more helpful than an ambitious programme.

Regularly. Gradually.

Start slowly and increase activity gradually. Notice how your knee responds during the activity and afterwards. A brief note can help: what did I do, for how long, and how did I feel afterwards? This can help you make specific adjustments to your plan.

When should I take a break?

Unfamiliar movement may feel demanding at first. But do not ignore severe pain or pain that keeps getting worse. Reduce the activity and get the symptoms assessed. If your knee suddenly becomes very hot and swollen, prompt medical assessment is important.

You do not have to work it out alone.

Guidance from a physiotherapist can help you choose suitable exercises and do them correctly. Other health conditions and your daily routine also need to be considered. After a joint injection or surgery, follow the specific instructions from your healthcare team as well. General exercise advice does not replace your personal aftercare plan.

What would you like to do more easily?

Choose a personal goal: climbing stairs more easily, going for a walk, or managing an outing better. Discuss which steps can help you work towards it. With knee osteoarthritis, the aim is to find a form of regular movement that feels right for you and fits into everyday life.

Keep moving.
